The House Cleaning Checklist We Actually Clean To

A standard house clean covers kitchen, bathrooms, bedrooms, shared rooms and floors on a fixed list. It leaves out the oven, the fridge, interior windows and walls. Some of those can be added to a deep-clean quote. Others need a separate service or a specialist. This is the list Rejuv Cleaning works to in Columbus homes.

Most cleaning checklists online are wish lists that read well and nobody ever finishes.

This one is different, because it is the list our teams work to in Columbus homes. Every line is a task somebody does on the day. Each room shows two columns: what a standard visit covers, and what it does not.

The second column matters more than the first. Almost every bad first visit starts the same way. Someone assumed a task was included. It was not, and nobody said so out loud.

How to use this list

Read the right-hand column first, because that is the honest half of the page.

Not everything in that column works the same way. Some of it can be added to a deep-clean quote. Some of it is a separate service with its own booking, like carpet extraction or upholstery. Some of it is repair, remediation or unsafe work that we do not take on at all.

Each entry says which. Tell us what matters to you when you ask for a quote, and we will say what can be included.

Use this list on any company you call, including us. Ask for their room-by-room list in writing. If they cannot send one, that tells you something before you hand over a key.

The kitchen

The kitchen and the bathrooms are where a clean is won or lost. Both are dense, and both take more minutes per square foot than any bedroom.

In a standard cleanNot in a standard clean
Counters and backsplashInside the oven — deep clean
Sink and faucet cleaned and polished, light surface buildup addressedHeavy mineral-scale removal — deep clean
Cabinet fronts, wipedInside the fridge or freezer — deep clean
Appliance exteriorsInside cabinets and drawers — deep clean, on request
Stovetop and control knobsBehind heavy appliances — only after inspection
Microwave, inside and outRange hood filter — deep clean
Trash and recycling outHand-washing dishes or managing a full dishwasher — not included

Dishes need a plain rule, because this is where expectations slip. Hand-washing dishes, unloading a full dishwasher and managing large quantities of dishes are not included in a standard clean. When an empty dishwasher is available, a reasonable number of dishes may be loaded so the sink can be cleaned. Otherwise, dishes may be moved carefully to a nearby safe area so the sink can be cleaned.

The oven and the fridge are the two people ask about most. Both are deep-clean work and both are slow. The product needs time to sit before it works, and that time cannot be rushed.

The bathrooms

Trash out

Hard water is the one to know about in Central Ohio. It leaves scale on glass and fixtures. Scale does not come off with more scrubbing. It needs the right product and time to sit. A standard visit keeps light buildup in check. Removing heavy built-up scale is deep-clean work.

The bedrooms

Mirrors and glassUnder heavy furniture — only after inspection
Beds madeChanging linens — on request, if a clean set is left out
Floors, vacuumed or moppedInside drawers — deep clean, on request

Beds get made on a standard visit. Want linens changed? Leave a clean set out and tell us. It takes a few minutes and it is a nice thing to come home to.

Living rooms and shared spaces

Glass tables and mirrorsCeiling fan blades on high vaults — only after inspection
Light switches and door handlesUpholstery cleaning — separate service
FloorsInside media cabinets — deep clean, on request
Light straightening of accessible itemsOrganizing or sorting possessions — not included

Straightening needs a boundary. We will square up cushions, line up what is on a coffee table and move small items to clean under them. Organizing, sorting possessions and clearing heavy clutter are not included unless separately scoped.

Clearing is worth a word too. Cleaning a surface and clearing one are different jobs. A counter has to be empty before it can be wiped. Fifteen minutes of clearing before we arrive buys back a real share of the visit.

Floors

Vacuum on carpet and rugsCarpet extraction — separate service
Accessible floor edges vacuumed or detailed by handMoving heavy furniture to reach edges — only after inspection
Mop on hard floorsStripping or waxing hard floors — specialty service

Carpet extraction is a machine job with its own booking. If your carpet needs more than a vacuum, we will say so. Carpet cleaning is its own service.

The whole house

High-touch points wipedInterior windows — deep clean
Baseboards visually checked and obvious condition flaggedWashing walls — deep clean
Trash from every roomGarage or finished basement — separate quote

Baseboards need explaining, because most lists are vague on them. We look at them on a standard visit and tell you if they need real work. We do not clean them, though. Doing them right is slow, so it sits in a deep clean.

What the right-hand column really means

Nothing in that column is excluded to be stingy. Each entry is there for a reason, and the reasons are not all the same.

Some tasks are simply slow, like the oven, the grout and built-up scale. These need time to sit rather than muscle. Those can usually be added to a deep-clean quote.

Some need a different machine and a different booking. Carpet extraction, upholstery, and stripping or waxing hard floors are separate services.

Some need your say-so rather than ours, like closets, drawers and cabinets. We do not open storage you have not asked us to open.

Some need a look first. Moving heavy furniture, reaching high vaulted fixtures and getting behind big appliances all depend on the room and on safe access.

So the honest answer is this. Tell us what matters when you ask for a quote, and we will say what can be included, what needs its own booking, and what needs somebody else. How the pricing works explains what moves a quote.

What we do not take on

A few things sit outside cleaning altogether, and it is fairer to say so here than at the door.

We do not handle pet waste, biohazards, active mold remediation, pest contamination or hazardous materials. We do not do repairs, and re-caulking and sealing are repairs rather than cleaning. We do not do work that needs unsafe ladder access.

If your job includes any of that, say so early. We will tell you what we can do and point you to the right kind of specialist for the rest.

How to turn this list into a spec

A list only gets useful the moment you can hold a company to what it says.

Three steps. Print the list and cross off what you do not need. Then add what you do want from the right-hand column, and say so when you ask.

That is a scope. Hand it to any cleaner and you can compare two quotes fairly, because you are pricing the same job twice.

Want the wider set? The cleaning checklists library adds the office, turnover and pre-visit lists as they are finished.

Print it and use it

Download the printable version. It is free to print and free to save. No email address is required, no form, and nobody gets added to a marketing list.

Tell us within 24 hours by phone, text, email or the customer portal. We will review the concern and arrange a reasonable re-clean of missed, agreed-scope areas at no additional charge.

Use it on us, or use it on somebody else. A list anyone can pick up is a tool, and a list behind a form is a lead magnet.

Common questions

Is a house cleaning checklist the same as a deep cleaning checklist?

No. A standard list holds a home at the level it is already at. A deep clean resets it, reaching baseboards, door frames, vent covers, window tracks and built-up scale. A first visit on a home that has gone a while without a cleaner is usually scoped that way.

Can everything in the right-hand column be added to my clean?

No, and it is worth knowing which is which. Some tasks can be added to a deep-clean quote. Carpet extraction, upholstery cleaning and specialty floor care are separate services. Repairs, remediation and unsafe work sit outside our scope. Tell us what matters when you ask for a quote and we will say what can be included.

Do you wash the dishes?

Hand-washing dishes, unloading a full dishwasher and managing large quantities of dishes are not included in a standard clean. When an empty dishwasher is available, a reasonable number of dishes may be loaded so the sink can be cleaned. Otherwise, dishes may be moved carefully to a nearby safe area so the sink can be cleaned.

Do you clean baseboards?

We check them on a standard visit and tell you if they need real work. Cleaning them properly is deep-clean work, so it is not part of a standard scope.

Do you tidy and organize?

We do light straightening of accessible items so surfaces can be cleaned. Organizing, sorting possessions and clearing heavy clutter are not included unless they are separately scoped.

Want this list run on your home rather than by you? Send your bedroom and bathroom count, plus how long since a cleaner last came, or call and tell us. You will receive a written flat quote within one business day in most cases. Unusual properties or specialty requests may need photographs or more information first.
